Dolphin Encounter

There is a legend that many students have told us about, and that legend is that there are dolphins on the west side of the island that come in pretty close and that you are able to swim out to them pretty easily and they are playful and fun. We have been wanting to do this since we heard about it 2 years ago, and have had 2 failed attempts at finding them.

Finally, Wednesday night we braved the chance to see dolphins once again with our neighbors and friends the canadians (Dan and Katie).

A little side note, the scary part is not swimming with the dolphins its the whole white people on the "west side" thing. West Oahu is pretty dang guetto.

We had plans to camp and get up early to find dolphins, and we did just that.
None of us slept very good due to telling scary stories for bed, being in the guetto on the beach, rain, and hard floor with small tent and 4 people.

But we still got up at 5:30am packed up camp...
drove to the beach we had been told we could see the said "dolphins"


We see one jump from the shore and excitedly we all get ready and say a quick prayer and start our swim out to the "dolphins." Poor Katie had asked a million times, guys are you SURE that was a dolphin jump? because she had never seen one before. We all replied yes and continued our swim.
We get out to where they were, and ....... my worst fear happened.

Much to our suprise....they were not dolphins.

They were about 20 reef sharks instead. We only saw 3 up close, but could count about 20 fins when we got back to shore. YIKES!!!

Needless to say, my child must of known mommy was in danger because my stomach tensed up and basically I panicked in the water. Katie and I tried our best to keep calm as we swam back to shore and our husbands were amazing and swam backwards the entire swim back to shore to make sure we were not followed.

I have never been so thrilled to see SAND in my entire life.

I have never felt more blessed and scared in my entire life.

Granted they were reef sharks, and reef sharks are not very aggressive... but they were still sharks. Are you freaking kidding me????

I think thats the last time I try to encounter dolphins.
